Little Folx Philosophy
As the owner and primary teacher of Little Folx, I take pride working to re-imagine how families and care providers can collectively help raise young people who are confident, curious and kind.
The program at Little Folx is structured as child-led and child-created, with an emphasis on the children's individual and group ideas and consent. I look to early learning theorists and the pedagogies of Madga Gerber (R.I.E founder), Maria Montessori and Reggio Emilia. Respecting even our youngest of children through communication and sensitive observation of their needs.
When caring for young infants and toddlers, our job is to ensure that even our youngest community members feel secure, are allowed the space to grow their sense of autonomy, are respected, and feel fully connected to their caregivers and community.
Our approach to care starts with a basic level of trust. Trusting the children and respecting that they are competent individuals with wants and needs of their own.
It’s important at Little Folx, to involve the children in care tasks. Diaper changes, feedings, dressing etc - these are times for caregivers to slow down and encourage even the tiniest infant to become an active participant rather than a passive recipient.
At Little Folx, I believe children learn best in a mixed-aged environment; we celebrate and acknowledge that just because you are the same age you may not have the same interest, ability or learning style. In my practice, I allow the infants in my care to develop mobility and other skills at their own pace. My goal with toddlers is to help encourage independence and practical life skills.
We also use American Sign language as a way to help our youngest non-verbal infants relay their wants and needs. Signs that seem to be the most useful are More, Milk, Water, Eat, All Done, Please and Thank you.
Play
Our days are focused around “Play”, a self-directed, play-based engagement method that encourages independent learning, tranquillity and respect for our surroundings. Drawing from the Montessori tradition, we encourage practical life skills in our dramatic role play, cooking, gardening, crafting and exploring with all senses.
We give infants and toddlers plenty of time for uninterrupted play. We provide children with age appropriate toys to help develop their senses and encourage exploration. Instead of trying to teach babies new skills, we appreciate and admire what babies are actually doing.
We have a large outdoor space and plan to utilize it or the nearby parks at least once a day, rain or shine. Spending time playing outside gives children the chance to explore the natural environment and have adventures.
